Its quite unfortunate that the deal broke just they found out he is an atheist and didnt care about their daughters feelings. i like the idea of featuring an atheist character but i don't like the fact that they made it in a negative light. same shit just a different program. they should be able to make it end by two of them living happily ever after.

Whose standards am I going by? Mine. Surely not the bible's. If I feel I have erred I forgive myself. I don't measure my life, or actions against the barometer of the bible or any other 'holy' book. To quote Abraham Lincoln...'when I do good, I feel good. When I do bad I feel bad, (that is my religion).' When I feel bad I take the necessary corrective steps. Not sure where you drew your reference of 'look at me and how good I am...' That's not the point of the post. I do not need gods (yours or anyone else's) to determine my worth. I do what I can, when I can- to be of assistance to others, not for brownie points, recognition, an afterlife reward-but because it's the RIGHT thing to do.

I ventured to your blog. You troll for Atheists? Do you troll for attention-that's usually why people troll.

According to your blog (see my answers between the slashes):

<blockquote>"You know how atheists rarely venture outside of the Old Testament lest they run into teachings of Jesus that convict them of a deep need for forgiveness? //FALSE//

And you know how atheists accuse Christians of cherry-picking verses to make our case? //Christians do cherry pick the bible//
Do you think atheists ever do the same thing? //FALSE//

Now atheists incorrectly associate Southern U.S. Slavery with the safety net slavery of early Israel. //SOURCE??//
That is why you will never see or hear an atheist ranting about this?"//You want to tell Atheists what to 'rant' about??//</blockquote>

‘good without gods.’
The thing is, it has nothing to do with how good we are. I mean, whose standard are you going to go by. Yours? Mine? Stalin's? The only thing that you need to be concerned about is forgiveness; forgiveness for real guilt because guess what? Nobody can be good enough to be good enough for heaven. So you can either get up to speed and deal with the issue at hand, or you can hide behind your pseudo intellectual parade of "look at me and how good I am."

Either deal with the truth or hide from it. The choice is yours.

Good luck on your journey.

Hi Jennifer,
My head perked up also when I heard the word, "Atheist." I agree it IS a start. My issue, is the writers fell prey to the stereotypes found common among believers. I was greatly disappointed in that. Believers who viewed the episode didn't come away thinking, they were only reinforced in believing what they've been taught about Atheists.

I'm hoping writers of other black shows will have been made aware of the comments posted on the internet and will stretch themselves and realize Atheists are just like everyone else the only difference is-we do not believe in deities.

First of all, I was sitting in the beauty salon not even watching the TV that was on until I heard the word "atheist". I perked my head up and was stunned to see an African American show featuring anyone that was an atheist. I don't really care that they didn't ask him about his atheism, I didn't care that they didn't really accept it, I was just glad that they attempted it. It's a start. I give the writers a lot of credit for going outside of the box a bit. I can't really think of any other black show that has done this - not that there isn't one - I just haven't seen it.

Drag,
You hit it on the nail. I did send an email to TV One and I asked them if they consulted an actual Atheist or two? The robotic basic responses emitted from 'Jack' told me they hadn't spoken to an Atheist. lol No I didn't expect him to break out into a complex dialogue on a 22 minute sitcom but I was expecting...plausibility. I did inform TV One while I'd love to support Belle's, it's impossible because Belle's has no interest in supporting me as an Atheist. And the intro of the show where the cast bow their heads in prayer sets the tone for the show. I'm ok with that (the family are believers)...I'm NOT ok with the inaccuracy of the show's portrayal of an Atheist.
